What is a laughter exercise?
I am glad you asked that question! When Dr. Madan Kataria first decided to try and get people to laugh more, he went to a local park and asked people to laugh with him. Several people thought he was nuts, but a few agreed, and soon he had a small group of people telling jokes and stories and laughing. However, they soon ran out of material and/or people shared inappropriate humor. So he asked himself how he could get people to laugh just for the sake of laughing. As a result, the Laughter Exercise was born. Laughter Exercises are little skits that we do to encourage us to laugh, to get in touch with our silly side, so we can eventually laugh for no reason. One of my favorite Laughter Exercises is the “Ants in the Pants Laugh”. I tell my fellow laughers that we are on a picnic, enjoying the food and the beautiful sunny day, when suddenly we feel a tickle in our pants. Oh no! We have Ants in Our Pants! And we start dancing around slapping at ourselves while laughing because those darn ants TICKLE! No biting ants at our picnic.
